Maverick Gunworks was founded by Ricky Barbour, a millwright for 35 years and an accomplished racecar mechanic and driver. Bringing his precision engineering background into the firearms world, Ricky built the shop into a trusted destination for quality craftsmanship and innovation. Today, Maverick Gunworks is home to three certified gunsmiths, including Cerakote specialist Chris Kistner. A 2018 graduate of Piedmont Community College’s Gunsmithing School, Chris began his career applying Cerakote in a high-volume production setting, where he refinished thousands of firearms and components for top manufacturers. Trusted by the Cerakote factory, he held the prestigious role of certifying new applicators to the brand’s exacting standards before transitioning to independent work to connect more directly with clients. While we are best known for our firearms customization, our Cerakote expertise extends far beyond the gun bench — providing advanced protective and decorative coatings for industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, cycling, and more. As avid shooters and hunters, our team uses and tests the same products we deliver, ensuring every project offers exceptional performance, durability, and style — whether for hunting, sport, collection, or industrial application
